Yeah, Yeah. I have been informed that even though nothing exciting has happened, a regular day in Germany is more exciting than a regular day in Orangeburg. So here are the details about what I found when I flossed my teeth. No really, I want to share!
Seriously, folks....Gabe and I have been busy but until recently no part of it has beenr eally exciting or fun. Thanksgiving was prefaced by the delivery of our household goods on Tuesday. Therefore, the feast was postponed until Saturday when I could find the oven. The moving guys were funny. The one that spoke English (there's got to be at least 1) was interesting. I found out that he was the son of a German mother and a Puerto Rican father (US military of course). The dad left and he was raised in Germany. So the guy looks seriously hispanic and speaks great english but not a lick of spanish. His english is what Gabe and I have taken to calling "MTV English" which is punctuated by a lot of "yo's" and "-izzle's" and it's really funny.
We had about 7700 lbs of household goods. 1000 of that was Gabe's toolbox. They had to call a special truck to unload it b/c apparently they didn't believe me when I told them on the phone how heavy it was. We kept waiting for it to fall off of the truck and smush one of the guys but thankfully that didn't happen.
On Saturday I made Gabe and Meg's First Thanksgiving. For those of you with "where will we spend the holidays when we get married?!" issues, let me share the strategy we used. Gabe and I always went to our respective households for the holidays. We figured that someday in the future we would have to choose and we wanted to put that day off as much as possible. Then, we got married and shortly before the holidays we moved to a foreign country. We have effectively put off the decision for at least 3 years. If they want to spend the holidays with us then they have to come here. So, it's that simple.
Shortly after Thanksgiving we learned that a friend of our from Charleston had passed away. It was a very difficult few days and we really wished we could have been there with our Charleston friends...I won't say much more about this because those involved already know the details. The take-away is that we couldn't really think about much else and it certainly wasn't a good time to be venting online.
It snowed on Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately the digital camera was buried somewhere and we have yet to find it. I took some pics with a disposable camera and I should be getting those tomorrow, so I should have some pictures then.
One exciting thing was my trip to London. My friend Jennie (who currently lives in South Africa) was on her way back to the States for a visit and she had a day-long layover in London. I flew up to meet her and we passed a whirlwind and slightly bleary-eyed day. She left the next morning but I stayed another day to take advantage of a cheap fare. I wandered about London fairly aimlessly and thought about all the fun things Gabe and I could do when we visit. Maybe this spring...
I can't promise anything, but I will try to get a picture of Gabe with his new apron. The older German ladies at his work love him and they even let him put the meat on the sandwiches some days. He's looking forward to starting some classes in January and cutting back on his hours. I personally think he's the best looking sandwich artist in the place :)
